How Mother Alphonse Marie was seen by the people who knew her personally, and what she herself said and wrote about God, hope and the spiritual life.

Testimonies of her contemporaries

How she was seen by those who knew her

Abbé Busson,

who is among the best informed witnesses of the life of Mother Alphonse Marie Eppinger, says that her figure, although very slender, is not weak. The expression of her face is serious, yet not gloomy. On the contrary, in conversation with her everyone quickly gains confidence, in which a modest joy can be sensed. Mother Alphonse Marie has a remarkable way of looking at a person. Her gaze is penetrating, searching, yet kindly. One might say that she can read the soul of another. Her voice is very soft, clear-toned, but not strong. Her manner of speaking is lucid.

Dr Kuhn,

who met her in person, says of her: “She is a young woman of very delicate health, her voice sounds clear, her manner is good-natured, the features of her face are intelligent. She answers my questions very politely, fully and without constraint.”

Abbé Glöckler,

who knew her personally and wrote her biography, says: Mother Alphonse Marie is of medium height, slender, almost thin. In her oval face shine two deep eyes which pierced visitors, so to speak, to the marrow. Her mouth with its narrow lips gives an impression of severity and command.

Looking at her last photograph, we read in her face a resolute and unbreakable will, her deep and searching eyes, her refined bearing. Yet this will is tempered by a warmth, a goodness that wishes to understand everyone. She joins active zeal with a wise reserve.

Mother Alphonse Marie is a balanced personality; her lively nature drives her to action. Yet she first thought through and examined the consequences of what she did. Once she had come to a conclusion before God, however, she did everything to carry it out, and nothing could hold her back. Her life offers us plenty of examples of her humble obedience to her Lord. She fulfilled his will always and in all circumstances. Towards a goal she saw clearly she went straight.  From childhood she possessed a perseverance that bordered on stubbornness. All her life she struggled with this fault.

Nothing escaped her keen eye, and yet she was cautious in her judgements. Mother Alphonse Marie fought the faults of her daughters very seriously and strictly. But with all her heart she always wished to forgive and to be kind. She was strict, yet she could at once forget what had been done to her. She explained it thus: “I am ready to kiss the feet of a sister who does not excuse herself when she is reproved and does not take offence”. The severity proper to a mother, which was her own, had nothing forbidding about it.

The sisters said of her: “We love our mother especially for her simplicity in thought and in action.” She loved solitude, yet she spoke with people gladly and with joy. This woman, who had such power over people, wished to remain hidden. She possessed a great love of solitude and of silence. Thus she was able to bring her work heroically to completion.

Her character expressed something original. The extraordinary sensitivity of her soul felt every suffering, yet she bore it out of love for the Crucified.
Not even the bitterest accusations could rob her of peace of soul. She let the wise of this world speak, while she herself placed all her trust in God.
Because she had passed through a long and hard school of suffering, she had a delicate understanding of the needs of her neighbours. All visitors left her consoled, thanks to her selfless goodness and especially to the supernatural character of her words.

The gift of reading the soul of another contributed especially to her being a sure guide for many. We know many testimonies of this. For everyone she had the right word and the needed advice. God endowed her with sound sense and certain judgement. Many left her resolved to set out on the right path in life.

God gave her a particular mission concerning priests. They came to her in great numbers. She spoke to them of the greatness and dignity of the priesthood. She prayed a great deal for priests, for the Holy Father and for the diocesan bishop. We see a deep peace on her face. To put it in Saint Paul’s words: she has finished her race.
Her eyes no longer rest on anything earthly; they look beyond all that is material, they look upon another and more beautiful world. These are not tired eyes. In them shines the light of a pure soul.

And the gentle smile? It wishes to tell us: “After enduring many sufferings, I know that now there remain faith, hope and love, these three. But the greatest of these is love!”

Her soul is leaving the body, which for her is now only a transparent shell.
This last image is for us the ripe harvest of a rich life, which Mother Alphonse Marie shaped in wonderful unity according to the goal she had set herself:

“Everything in God, with God and for God, to his greater honour and glory!”

  • Place all your trust in God’s mercy and in the merits alone of Jesus Christ, our Divine Redeemer.
  • Turn to him on every occasion without a trace of mistrust. Ask, and you will receive.
  • It is not possible for us not to be heard if we place all our trust in God and ask him persistently.
  • The soul that places all its trust in God can lack nothing; it always receives what it needs to sustain it.
  • Do you not know that God does everything for the salvation of souls? What God does is always best for us, because he can allow nothing that would harm us.
  • Let us place all our trust in God alone; from him we expect and hope for everything: let us never believe that he will abandon us.
  • Do not grieve over earthly things; if you are to be troubled about anything, let it be only that your soul and the soul of your neighbour may not be lost; care only for what God asks.
  • Know that God’s mercy has no bounds.
  • When God was so good as to call us to the religious life, would it not offend him if we did not have boundless trust in him in all our needs? Turn to him therefore on every occasion.
  • God has placed in you the will to please him and to do everything in him, through him and with him, to his honour.
  • The Lord is with you and wishes from time to time to let you feel that he is here.
  • Would it not be ingratitude to cling to someone else and not to him who alone deserves your heart for his perfection and his benefits?
  • How great is God’s goodness and mercy; he does not look upon our weaknesses.
  • The Saviour feels offended if, because of our weaknesses, we turn away from him.
  • Despite our ingratitude God leads us by his grace and shows us his mercy ever more.
  • Do you not live with God? Do you not live for God? What a happy lot! Never again any sorrow! No discouragement!
  • Have courage; God is with you whenever you show the will to please him.
  • In God’s service we always have something to struggle with, but have courage, and think often of your last hour.
  • Even if it sometimes seems to you that God does not hear you, do not slacken in your petitions. He never refuses those who ask him; he sees what is useful and salutary for them.
  • My children, in the service of God everything now seems hard to you. The struggles are unceasing, sometimes even fierce, but have courage and think often of your last hour: how you will then wish to have borne everything out of love for God.
  • You will lack nothing for walking the way of perfection, advancing along it and persevering to the end.
  • Let the thought of heaven give you courage. Remember that the saints became saints in struggles and suffering.
  • Call upon God without ceasing. Ask him for help, but do so with the simplicity and humility of a child speaking with its father.
  • The saints fought under his gaze and guidance. Eternal reward is the recompense of their obedience.
  • God does not look upon the body and what is pleasant to it. He looks only upon the soul and upon all that benefits it and leads it to salvation. Let us be led by God’s hand without fear and without impatience.
  • I see worth neither in wealth nor in poverty: all the children God sends me I value with the same love.
  • Why do we complain of our own poverty of spirit and not expect everything from God? God refuses nothing if we ask him perseveringly.
  • Believe, my children, that if you see everything in God and always act through him, God will speak and work through you.
  • My Jesus, although I feel no love for you in my heart, I am ready to remain faithful to you until death.
  • My daughter, your prayer is pleasing; look always upon me and leave everything to me.
  • My soul is filled with inexpressible happiness at the thought that one day it will see you and possess you eternally as the reward of its struggles.
  • My Jesus, how hard it is to live in the world and not be able to love you. Though I cannot love you, I still go on praying.
  • My Jesus, how can I live in this world! I fear, Jesus, that I shall lose you and be unfaithful to you. I will gladly do anything; only give me the grace always to keep my heart pure for you.
  • My God, have mercy on me; Mary, my Mother, ask these virtues for me.
  • My God, I want to love you all my life and always to do what pleases you.
  • My Jesus! Jesus, my love! Jesus, my joy!
  • My Jesus, help me to keep all these words in my heart. I have long desired to love you, but I am so weak. My Jesus, when shall I truly know how I am to love you?
  • My Jesus, grant me the grace that not a single hour of my day may pass without my loving you.
  • My Jesus, if only I could kneel before you in true recollection and love.
  • Let all your thoughts, all your desires, all your feelings and all your love belong to him alone. Let him become the sole object of your love.
